Building a set of custom wheels can fulfill many needs: maybe you simply need a wheelset that will ride a certain way, fit a certain tire size, or any other practical requirement; but it can also give you much more freedom to choose how that wheelset looks. This week's Wheel Build of the Week is an example of how versatile White Industries' hubs are because these two wheelsets, while based on the same hubs, are designed for different bikes. The rider who bought these two wheelsets wanted one with a bit of extra rim width and toughness for mountain bike use, and another set built for slightly smaller 700c tires for gravel use. Two wheelsets also meant an opportunity to change up the look a bit with different nipple colors, and we've got to say that the red nipples look great with those silver spokes! 🤩
White Industries CLD hubs make a really solid base for a huge range of wheelsets. They're light enough to serve for road and gravel use, but durable enough for mountain. The durable yet light-weight titanium freehub body means your hub will hold up to years of cassette removal and replacement as well as the rigors of simply keeping the pawls moving and engaging reliably. And should you decide to change to a different drivetrain that uses a different cassette standard, swapping freehubs is very easy!
What better complement to such a great hub than White Industries' own G25A rims? For the 700c wheelset, these were the rims that fit the bill best. Not only do these rims have a sweet profile–complete with tubeless readiness, off-center spoke holes, and a generous 25mm inner width–they've got a welded seam for durability. To top it off, just like the rest of White Industries' products, they're made in Petaluma, California!
For the 650B set, Velocity USA's slightly wider, more mountain-oriented Blunt SS rims were the ideal choice. These rims have thicker sidewalls for extra durability, while keeping weight low, and of course they're tubeless ready and made in the USA as well.
